AVIF is a modern format that often stores photos noticeably smaller than JPG at the same quality - ideal for fast websites and lean storage. Modern browsers display AVIF natively.

The JPG is decoded locally (including correct EXIF orientation) and encoded as AVIF with a self-hosted codec. The quality slider controls the file size. Nothing is uploaded.

The biggest win comes when serving photos on a website: smaller files mean faster load times, a better Core Web Vitals score and less data usage for mobile visitors. The conversion only makes sense, though, if your audience uses modern browsers - ideally ship AVIF with a JPG fallback in the picture element so no visitor sees a broken image. Note as well that while AVIF compresses again, the typical JPG artefacts from the first compression remain.
