Motor-vehicle tax for a car first registered on or after 1 January 2021 has two parts: a displacement part and a CO2 part. The displacement part is 2 euros per started 100 cubic centimetres for petrol engines and 9.50 euros for diesels - which is why diesels pay considerably more. The CO2 part is levied only on emissions above 95 grams per kilometre and rises in six tiers from 2 to 4 euros per gram. Up to 95 grams the CO2 part stays free.

The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, in pure JavaScript - nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. You enter the engine displacement, the CO2 figure and the fuel type; the calculator works out the displacement part, the tiered CO2 part and from these the annual tax. The annual amount is rounded down to whole euros under section 11. It also shows the approximate monthly amount. Change any input and everything updates instantly.

An honest note: the calculator covers the standard case of a car first registered from 2021 (petrol or diesel). It does not model older registrations with a different tariff, pure electric cars (tax-exempt until the end of 2030), motorcycles, motorhomes, commercial vehicles, or temporary relief for especially low-emission vehicles. The displacement and the CO2 figure (WLTP) are in Part I of the registration certificate. The calculator applies to Germany only; the customs office assessment is authoritative.

In 3 steps

  1. Enter the engine displacement in cubic centimetres (shown in the registration certificate).
  2. Enter the CO2 emissions in grams per kilometre and the fuel type.
  3. Read off the annual tax, the displacement part, the CO2 part and the monthly amount.

Limitations: A model-based estimate for a car first registered from 2021 (petrol/diesel) under the KraftStG: displacement part plus the tiered CO2 part above 95 g/km, the annual amount rounded down to whole euros. Not modelled: older registrations, electric cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, commercial vehicles, temporary relief. Applies to Germany only. Not tax advice.

FAQ

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely locally in the browser (pure JavaScript); nothing is sent or stored.

Where do I find displacement and CO2?

In Part I of the registration certificate: the displacement under field P.1, the CO2 figure (WLTP) under field V.7.

Why does a diesel pay more than a petrol car?

The displacement part for a diesel is 9.50 euros per started 100 cubic centimetres, far above the 2 euros for petrol. The CO2 part is the same for both.

Does it apply to electric or older vehicles?

No. Pure electric cars are tax-exempt until the end of 2030, and registrations before 2021 use a different tariff. The calculator models neither.

Is the annual amount rounded?

Yes. Under section 11 KraftStG the annual tax is rounded down to whole euros. The monthly figure is the annual amount divided by twelve.
