The reaction time test measures your simple visual reaction time: as soon as the surface switches from red to green, you tap or click as fast as you can. From 5 attempts the tool builds your average and your best single value. The measurement uses high-resolution browser timestamps and pointer events so that as little avoidable delay as possible ends up in the number, including on touch devices. Everything runs locally in your browser: no account, no server, no transmission of your results.

What is normal? The largest open comparison study (Woods et al. 2015) measured 1469 adults between 18 and 65: the mean was around 231 ms with a spread of 28 ms between people. Reaction time increases with age by about 0.55 ms per year. Historical 19th-century measurements with mechanical devices came in at 181 to 189 ms because they included almost no equipment delay.

Your measured number always includes the delay of your display, input device and browser: depending on hardware that can be up to 100 ms, and it cannot be subtracted out. So compare yourself primarily against yourself on the same device. That is exactly why the test stores your best score, history and daily streak locally in your browser - with a visible export and delete button, so your data genuinely belongs to you.

FAQ

Are my results uploaded or stored?

Nothing is uploaded: the measurement runs entirely locally in your browser, and your results never leave your device. Your best score, history (at most the last 50 runs) and daily streak are stored locally by your browser - you can export them as a JSON file or delete them with one click at any time. There is no account and no server leaderboard.

What is a good reaction time?

In the reference study (Woods et al. 2015, 1469 adults) the mean was around 231 ms, with a 28 ms spread between people. Values around 200 ms are very fast; values around 260 ms are still entirely ordinary. Keep in mind: in a browser, device delay is added on top, so your absolute value usually comes out somewhat higher than under laboratory conditions.

Why is my value higher than in studies or on other devices?

Your display, input device and browser add a device-dependent delay to every measurement - up to roughly 100 ms depending on hardware. A 60 Hz display, for example, shows the color change up to 17 ms later than a 144 Hz display. These components cannot be subtracted out. What is meaningful is therefore primarily the comparison of your own values on the same device.

Can I improve my reaction time?

Within limits: rested, focused and warmed up you react measurably faster, and a few practice runs remove the initial uncertainty. Large training gains are not to be expected for simple reaction time though - it is strongly physiologically determined and increases with age by about 0.55 ms per year. The local streak helps you track your day-to-day form honestly.

Where does the "faster than X%" comparison come from?

From a published study, never from our own data collection: the reference is Woods et al. (2015) with 1469 adults, mean 231 ms and spread 28 ms. Since the study does not publish a percentile table, the tool computes the percentage as a normal approximation over those aggregates - the source and this note are shown visibly right at the result.

How is this different from Human Benchmark or other reaction-time tests?

In basic principle (wait for the color change, react as fast as possible) such tests are inevitably similar - the idea itself is not new. The difference is where the comparison number comes from: here the reference value comes from a named, citable study (Woods et al. 2015, 1469 participants) instead of internally collected, never-published user data - and the measurement, including your history, stays entirely local in your browser, never on a foreign server.
