The color vision test shows you several plates made of colored dots, one after another, each hiding a digit. The plates are not colored randomly - they are constructed along real confusion lines in color space, the exact axes along which certain color vision deficiencies (protanopia, deuteranopia) genuinely cannot tell two colors apart. Every plate is freshly generated each time you take the test.

The underlying math comes from published color-vision-deficiency simulation models (Machado, Oliveira & Fernandes, 2009) - the same models professional color-blindness simulators use. Naive random red-green patterns without this construction would produce systematically wrong results, because they do not actually model a real color vision deficiency.

Display calibration, brightness and ambient light noticeably affect color perception - for a meaningful result, test on a well-calibrated screen in normal lighting. The result is a rough indicator, not an eye-care diagnosis.

Why are the plates different every time?

The digit, color pair and pattern are freshly generated every run using real randomness (crypto.getRandomValues) - there are no fixed plates you could memorize.

What are confusion lines?

These are directions in color space along which certain color vision deficiencies cannot tell two colors apart - derived from published simulation matrices (Machado et al. 2009). This test’s plates are constructed exactly along those lines.

Why not real Ishihara plates?

The original Ishihara plates are copyrighted. This tool generates its own, procedurally generated plates following the same scientific principle.
