Leasing differs from a loan in one decisive way: you do not pay off the full price. At the end of the term a residual value (the final or balloon payment) remains, which you either pay to keep the asset or use to hand it back. So the monthly payment finances only the loss in value plus the interest - not the whole purchase price. That is exactly why lease payments are lower than the instalments of a comparable loan, even though the residual is still open at the end.
The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, in pure JavaScript - nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. The calculator finances the price minus the present value of the residual over the term (the same annuity maths as the loan calculator, just with a final payment). With a residual of zero the payment matches a normal annuity loan exactly. You see the monthly payment, the total of all lease payments, the final payment and the total cost if you buy the asset at the end. Change an input and everything updates instantly.
An honest note: this is a simplified financing model. Real lease contracts often include a down payment, processing and delivery fees, insurance, maintenance and excess- or low-mileage clauses - all of which change the actual payment and are not modelled here. Whether leasing or buying is better for tax also depends on the individual case. What always counts is your lease offer. Amounts in euros as an example - the maths applies to any currency. Not financing advice.

FAQ
Are my inputs uploaded?
No. The calculation runs entirely locally in the browser (pure JavaScript); nothing is sent or stored.
Why is a lease payment lower than a loan instalment?
Because with leasing you do not pay off the full price, only down to the residual. You pay the residual (the final payment) only at the end - or you hand the asset back. Worked example: a 30,000 euro price, a 15,000 euro residual, a 4 percent rate and 36 months give a payment of about 493 euros - a full loan on the same terms would be around 886 euros.
What is the final or balloon payment?
The residual value left open at the end of the term. With balloon financing you pay it to keep the asset; with a classic lease you hand the asset back instead.
Does this cover all leasing costs?
No. A down payment, fees, insurance, maintenance and mileage clauses are not included and change the real payment. The calculator shows the pure financing payment; your offer is what counts.
