AVIF is a very modern image format with excellent compression and transparency support. Older programs, some image viewers and certain print shops do not open it reliably, however. JPG is supported almost everywhere.

The AVIF is decoded locally with a self-hosted codec and exported as JPG; transparent areas are filled with white. Nothing is ever uploaded - the conversion runs entirely in the browser.

AVIF comes from the AV1 video codec and uses its intra-frame compression for still images - that explains the high efficiency, but also why older image viewers, office programs and some phones do not know it yet. JPG, by contrast, is the rugged classic that cameras, printers, preview dialogs and every photo service have read for decades. Do not send your AVIF blindly to someone whose software you do not know - with JPG you are on the safe side and the image is guaranteed to open.

      FAQ

      Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in the browser - even in airplane mode.

Why does my program not open AVIF?

AVIF is young: the format was only finalised in 2019, and many older programs never received an update for it. Windows needs a separate extension to display it, and older office and image-viewer versions give up entirely. As JPG the same image opens everywhere - it has been the standard there for decades.

      Keep transparency?

JPG itself cannot store transparency. If your AVIF contains transparent areas, the tool fills them with the colour from the Background option - white from the factory, any other on request. For a result with a real alpha channel, convert AVIF to PNG instead.

      Several files at once?

Yes, download individually or as a ZIP.
