JPEG XL (JXL) is a very efficient image format that even supports lossless storage. The catch: barely any browser or program opens JXL reliably yet - Chrome removed its support again, others do not display it at all. As JPG, by contrast, your image works everywhere.

The JXL is decoded locally with a self-hosted codec and exported as JPG; transparent areas are filled with white. Nothing is ever uploaded - the conversion runs entirely in the browser.

JPEG XL was designed, among other things, as a modern successor to classic JPG and meant to replace both: small photos and lossless graphics. In practice it has stalled on hesitant browser adoption, which is why you often need the route back to JPG just to send, upload or display a JXL file at all. If your JXL comes from a lossless source, the exported JPG is of course lossy - for maximum edge sharpness choose JXL to PNG instead.

      In 3 steps

      1. Drop or tap your JXL file.
      2. Choose a quality (optional).
      3. Download the JPG - with no upload.

Limitations: JPG cannot store transparency; transparent areas become white. If you need transparency, use JXL to PNG. JPG is larger than JXL at the same quality, but readable everywhere.
