Two contract drafts, two exports of the same report, or a revised version of a form - this tool shows what genuinely changed between two PDF files: which text was added, which was removed, which was merely reworded, and whether paragraphs turned bold/italic or moved position on the page.

Important and honest: this is a structural content comparison, not a pixel-level visual diff like in an image editor. It compares the text both PDFs contain (via the same pdf.js text layer PDF to text also uses) - a scanned, image-only PDF has no text layer and cannot be meaningfully compared this way (run PDF OCR on it first). Images are compared by placement (position and size) only, never by their pixel content.

Drop the original file first, then the changed one (the order in the review tray decides, adjustable by dragging or with the arrow keys - exactly like Merge PDF). The tool aligns both documents page by page, matches paragraphs, headings, lists and tables by their content, and builds a clear HTML report: added text appears highlighted, removed text struck through, changed text with a word-by-word diff, plus markers for formatting and position changes. If the two files differ in page count or in content, the report shows that honestly instead of pretending a similarity that is not there.

Everything runs locally in the browser via the self-hosted pdf.js engine - your documents are not uploaded and not sent to any server, not even for the comparison itself.

    In 3 steps

    1. Drop the original and the changed PDF (in that order).
    2. Check the order in the review tray, then start the comparison.
    3. Download the HTML comparison report and open it in a browser.

Limitations: Compares the text layer extracted from both PDFs - a structural content comparison, not a pixel-level visual diff. Scanned, image-only PDFs with no text layer cannot be meaningfully compared (run PDF OCR on it first). Images are compared by placement only, never by pixel content. A pure case- or whitespace-only edit with no other text change is not reported as a difference. Needs exactly two PDF files; if one is password-protected or corrupt, the comparison stops with a message naming which of the two files is affected.

    FAQ

    Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. The entire comparison runs locally in the browser via the self-hosted pdf.js engine.

Is this a pixel-level visual diff?

No, explicitly not. It is a structural comparison of text, formatting and order - not an image-editor-style pixel-for-pixel overlay.

Which file needs to be dropped first?

The original version first, the changed one second - the order in the review tray decides, and you can adjust it by dragging or with the arrow keys.

Does the tool detect a paragraph that was only moved?

Yes. An element whose content is unchanged but that moved to a different spot on the page is marked "Moved" instead of showing up as removed-and-re-added.

Are formatting changes like bold/italic detected?

Yes. If a paragraph or heading switches from plain to bold or italic (or back), the report shows that as its own marker, even when the text itself did not change.

What happens with two completely different documents?

The report honestly flags that almost no matching content was found, instead of pretending a false similarity - the full page-by-page comparison is still shown regardless.

Does this also work with scanned PDFs?

Only if a real text layer exists. A pure image PDF with no text needs PDF OCR run on it first.

Is the comparison free, and is there a limit?

Yes, completely free, no account and no watermark - because everything runs on your device instead of a server.
