Shohizei (消費税) is Japan's consumption tax, comparable to VAT. Since October 2019, a standard rate of 10 percent applies, alongside a reduced rate of 8 percent for most food and drink (excluding alcohol and eating in at a restaurant) and certain newspaper subscriptions. This tool converts an entered price in both directions: from tax-exclusive to tax-inclusive, or the reverse.
Enter your price, choose whether it already includes tax, and the matching rate - the tool instantly shows the tax-inclusive price, the tax-exclusive price and the pure tax amount. When converting FROM a tax-inclusive price, the net amount is rounded down to the whole yen, matching standard Japanese retail practice.
Everything runs locally in your browser as plain JavaScript - your price is never uploaded, sent anywhere or stored.

In 3 steps
Enter the price in yen.
Choose whether the price already includes tax, and pick the rate (10% or 8%).
Read off the tax-inclusive/exclusive price and the tax amount.
Limitations: A pure conversion of a given price between tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive at the 10% and 8% rates. Does not check whether a specific product actually qualifies for the reduced rate (e.g. the alcohol/dining-in exceptions) - that judgement is yours to make. Not a substitute for tax advice, Japan only.
