A cover letter, a manuscript or an official document drafted in Pages - and then it turns out the recipient does not even own a Mac or an iPhone. Without the Pages app, the content of a .pages file stays out of reach for them. This tool solves that by reading out the PDF preview already sitting inside the document and handing it over unchanged.
The reason this works at all: a .pages document is technically a ZIP container. In old, 2013-era Pages ’09 files, the app writes a complete PDF rendition of the whole text into it at save time - the very same preview Finder or Spotlight use to show a thumbnail. This tool reaches locally in your browser for exactly that embedded file instead of rendering anything itself.
Honestly framed, this only applies to older files: current Pages versions (roughly since 2013) only write a JPEG thumbnail into the ZIP at save time, no longer a full PDF - this tool then finds no matching preview and reports so openly instead of delivering an empty or wrong file. For a current .pages file, a failure is therefore the normal case, not an exception.

The tool shows a clear message instead of a blank or broken PDF. For a current Pages file, re-saving in Pages will NOT bring back a PDF preview - modern versions only store a JPEG there. With access to Pages, export yourself via "File > Export To > PDF" instead; without Pages, ask whoever created the file for a PDF version.
No, the old package format is a folder rather than a single file and cannot be dropped this way. Only the modern, flat .pages format is read - and even there only when a PDF preview is actually embedded (see above).
