A PAN (Permanent Account Number) is the ten-character alphanumeric identifier India's Ministry of Finance (Income Tax Department) issues for tax purposes: five letters, four digits, one letter (e.g. AAAAA9999A). The fourth letter is not arbitrary - it publicly, documentedly encodes the holder type: among others P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a firm, G for a government body. This tool checks the shape and reads off that holder type.

Honest and important: the Income Tax Department has never published the generation algorithm for the final (tenth) letter. Unlike Turkey's TC Kimlik No, there is no reliable, publicly documented check-digit formula here that this tool could reproduce. This tool therefore does not invent a check-digit test - it validates only the shape (length, letter/digit groups) and reads the fourth letter as the holder type; the result shows that honestly as "checksumVerified: false".

The entire check runs locally in your browser as plain JavaScript - your PAN is never uploaded, sent anywhere or stored. That matters precisely for a tax ID: it does not belong in a foreign online form.

In 3 steps

  1. Enter the PAN into the text field.
  2. Click check.
  3. Read the format result and the holder type.

Limitations: IMPORTANT: this tool performs only a mathematical checksum/format check. It is not an official identity, existence, or registry verification and not a request to any authority. Any additional information derived from the number's structure (here: the holder type) is based solely on the publicly documented encoding logic of the issuing authority. The tenth letter is NOT verified as a check digit - no publicly documented formula for it exists.

FAQ

Is my PAN uploaded?

No. The check runs entirely locally in your browser; the PAN never leaves your device and is not stored.

Does a valid result confirm the PAN is real and registered?

No. It only confirms the shape is correct (letter/digit groups) and maps the holder type. Whether the PAN actually exists and is active is known only to the Income Tax e-filing portal.

What does the fourth letter mean?

It encodes the holder type, e.g. P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a firm, A/B/T for various associations of persons, L for a local authority, J for an artificial juridical person, G for a government body.

Does the tool verify the last character as a check digit?

No, deliberately not. The Income Tax Department never published the algorithm for it; the tool does not invent a check it cannot substantiate.
