How long does it take to read a text? This estimate is useful anywhere you want to inform readers: blogs show the reading time at the top of an article, newsletters plan their length with it, and for a talk it helps gauge the speaking time. The reading time is the word count divided by a reading speed in words per minute.

You paste your text and pick a reading speed: slow (150), normal (200) or fast (250 words per minute). The tool counts the words and outputs the estimated reading time as minutes and seconds plus rounded minutes. Since only the word count matters, the estimate is language-neutral and applies to any prose.

The whole calculation runs entirely locally in your browser in pure JavaScript - your text is not uploaded, not stored, and no foreign library is loaded from a CDN. You can download the result as a text file or copy it straight out.

    In 3 steps

    1. Paste the text into the text field.
    2. Choose a reading speed (slow, normal, fast).
    3. Read the estimated reading time or download it as a text file.

Limitations: The reading time is an estimate from the word count and the chosen speed alone; actual reading speed depends on the person, language and difficulty. A word is a whitespace-separated unit. The estimate does not account for images, tables or code blocks.

    FAQ

    Is my text uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser; your text never leaves your device and is not stored.

Which reading speed should I pick?

Normal (200 words per minute) is a good average for adults. Slow (150) for difficult texts, fast (250) for practised readers.

    How is a word counted?

As a whitespace-separated unit. That matches the usual word count in word processors.

    How accurate is the estimate?

It is a guideline. The real reading time depends on the person, language and difficulty; the chosen speed adjusts the estimate.
