US federal income tax follows a progressive bracket schedule with seven rates from 10 to 37 percent. The standard deduction comes off gross income first - only the remainder, the taxable income, is run through the IRS brackets.
The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, in pure JavaScript - nothing is uploaded or stored. It shows the gross income, the federal tax, the marginal rate (the rate on the next dollar earned), the effective average rate and the after-tax income - instantly on every input.
An honest note: this is a model-based estimate of the pure federal bracket tariff, not tax advice. FICA (Social Security/Medicare), state tax, tax credits and further deductions beyond the standard deduction are not included - see the paycheck calculator for the full picture. The calculator applies to the US only, tax year 2026.
A stubborn misconception concerns the brackets: moving into the next bracket does not tax your whole income at the higher rate, only the part above the bracket threshold. So a raise never lowers your take-home pay. That is exactly why the effective average rate always sits below the marginal rate - the calculator shows both side by side so the difference is visible.

FAQ
Does my income leave my device?
No, the entire calculation runs locally in your browser - nothing is uploaded or stored.
What is the difference to the marginal rate?
The marginal rate applies only to the last dollar earned; the effective average rate applies to the whole income - it is almost always lower because of the bracket structure.
Is FICA included?
No, this calculator shows only federal income tax. FICA and state tax are computed by the paycheck calculator.
Is the standard deduction applied automatically?
Yes, the calculator automatically subtracts the 2026 standard deduction for the chosen filing status from gross income.
Are tax credits included?
No, tax credits like the Child Tax Credit reduce the tax further and are not modelled here.
