A US paycheck calculator shows what actually arrives from a gross salary: federal income tax under the progressive IRS brackets, FICA (Social Security plus Medicare) and, depending on the state, a state income tax. Nine states levy no income tax at all, others a single flat rate, and the rest a progressive bracket schedule.

The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, in pure JavaScript - nothing is uploaded or stored. Pretax deductions (like a 401k contribution) come off the annual salary first, then the standard deduction for federal tax. FICA is computed on the full gross salary (Social Security up to its wage base, Medicare uncapped plus the additional tax at very high income). State tax comes from a 51-jurisdiction table (50 states plus D.C.).

An honest note: this is a model-based estimate, not tax advice or an actual pay stub. Progressive state schedules are simplified to 2-4 tiers (real schedules sometimes have more); for a few states the real top rate is used as a simplified flat rate, which tends to overstate tax at lower incomes - both are disclosed. Local/city taxes, dependent credits and pretax benefits beyond the one input field are not included.

In 3 steps

  1. Enter your annual salary and filing status.
  2. Choose your state and pay frequency.
  3. Read off federal tax, FICA, state tax and take-home pay.

Limitations: A model-based estimate, not an actual pay stub. Progressive state schedules are simplified to 2-4 tiers; a few states use the real top rate as a flat approximation (overstates tax at lower incomes). Local taxes, dependent credits and further pretax benefits are not included. FICA is computed on the full gross salary regardless of pretax deductions.

FAQ

Does my salary or state leave my device?

No, the entire calculation runs locally in your browser - nothing is uploaded or stored.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

What is FICA?

The Federal Insurance Contributions Act - the payroll taxes for Social Security (retirement) and Medicare (senior health coverage) taken from every paycheck.

Why is the state tax only an estimate?

Progressive schedules are simplified to a few tiers, local surcharges are missing, and a few states use a flat top-rate approximation. For an exact figure, use your state's own withholding tables.

Why is FICA not reduced by pretax deductions?

A simplification: FICA is applied here to the full gross salary, although certain pretax benefits (e.g. health premiums under a cafeteria plan) can, in practice, also lower FICA.
