Limitations: PNG is lossless - no detail is lost, but for photos the file stays larger than a JPG. Multi-page TIFFs yield several PNGs. Very large TIFFs can use a lot of memory on mobile devices. Embedded metadata such as capture date, camera and GPS location does not survive the re-encode - only the image orientation is baked into the pixels beforehand. The output is 8-bit sRGB; a 16-bit TIFF source is brought down to 8 bits per channel in the process.
