Making a too-small image bigger without it turning mushy is a common task before printing, for a larger display, or to give an old photo new life. This tool offers two real methods in one: a fast classic upscale that works instantly on any device, and optionally an AI model that delivers sharper results on devices with suitable graphics-chip support (WebGPU).
By default the fast classic method runs: a high-quality enlargement right in the browser, typically in under a second. Turn on "AI quality" and the tool automatically checks whether your device genuinely supports WebGPU. If it does, a real AI model (Real-ESRGAN, open source, BSD-3-Clause licensed) upscales the image in small tiles and reassembles it - depending on image size that can take a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Without WebGPU available, the tool honestly keeps using the classic method automatically instead of forcing a painfully slow AI computation on a single processor core.
The result's filename tells you which path actually ran: a result with the "-ai" suffix was computed by the AI, one without it came from the classic method. Very large images also use the classic method for time reasons, even with "AI quality" turned on. Everything happens locally in your browser - your image is never uploaded, and it even works offline after your first visit.

Without WebGPU, AI computation over a single processor core is impractically slow for a normal photo (several minutes) - so it is deliberately not attempted automatically there.
