EGN stands for Edinen grazhdanski nomer ("uniform civil number") and has served as Bulgaria's ten-digit identifier for every person registered in the country since the 1970s. Unlike many Western European social-insurance numbers, the digits themselves already reveal quite a bit: the birth year, month and day sit in the first six positions, with an add-on to the month value signalling whether someone was born in the 19th, 20th or 21st century. The following three positions place the number within a region and simply count upward; whether the last of them is even or odd decides male or female. Right at the end sits a tenth digit, worked out from the first nine through a fixed weighting scheme, that catches typos.

On paste, the tool automatically handles any spaces or dashes in the number. Within seconds you get either a green confirmation with the extracted birth date and sex, or a clear error explaining why it does not fit: too short or too long, a calendar day that simply does not exist, or a final digit that does not match the computed one.

Nothing you type ever leaves your computer or phone: the whole calculation happens right in the browser, with no server call, no intermediate storage and not a single piece of foreign code loaded from the network.

  3. Read off the result, birth date and sex.

Limitations: This tool performs only a mathematical checksum/format check. It is not an official identity, existence, or registry verification and not a request to any authority. Any additional information derived from the number's structure is based solely on the publicly documented encoding logic of the issuing authority. The region historically co-encoded in the digit block 7-9 is deliberately not evaluated by this tool.

FAQ

Is my EGN uploaded or stored?

No. The check runs entirely locally in your browser; the number never leaves your device and is not stored.

Does the tool check whether the person really exists?

No. It only checks whether the structure and check digit are mathematically correct - no query against a Bulgarian registry or authority.

Where does the shown birth date come from?

It is decoded purely by calculation from the first 6 digits of the EGN - the publicly known encoding logic, not from a registry lookup.

What happens with an invalid input?

The tool names the reason: wrong length, a non-existent date, or a wrong check digit - never a made-up "valid".

Does this also work offline?

Yes. After the first load, the check works entirely without an internet connection.
