Fixed Deposit (FD) and Recurring Deposit (RD) are the two classic savings products offered by Indian banks. With an FD you deposit a single lump sum and let it grow for a fixed tenure at a fixed rate; interest is usually compounded quarterly (the most common convention among Indian banks), though some banks also offer monthly, half-yearly or annual compounding. With an RD you instead deposit a fixed amount every month, and interest is compounded quarterly at almost every bank regardless of the monthly deposit cadence.

The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, with no upload. First pick FD or RD; in FD mode you enter the lump sum, interest rate, tenure and compounding frequency, in RD mode the monthly deposit, interest rate and tenure in months. The calculator applies the standard compound-interest formula (FD) or the quarterly-compounded RD formula used by Indian banks, and instantly shows the maturity value, the amount deposited and the interest earned - every amount shown in Indian lakh/crore grouping.

An honest note: this is a model calculation based on the interest rate you enter - actual FD and RD rates differ between banks, tenures and customer groups (senior citizens often get a premium) and change regularly. Tax on the interest (TDS) is not modelled here. Always check your bank's current rate before making a real deposit.

In 3 steps

  1. Choose FD or RD.
  2. Enter the amount, interest rate and tenure (for FD, also the compounding frequency).
  3. Read off the maturity value, amount deposited and interest earned.

Limitations: A model-based estimate of the maturity value of an FD (compound interest with a selectable compounding frequency) or RD (the standard quarterly-compounded formula Indian banks use) based on an interest rate you enter. Not modelled: TDS on interest, bank-specific special terms (e.g. a senior-citizen premium), premature withdrawal. Not financial advice.

FAQ

How often is FD interest compounded?

Depends on the compounding frequency you choose - most Indian banks compound FDs quarterly by default, some also offer monthly, half-yearly or annual compounding.

Why does RD use a different formula than FD?

Because RD deposits a new amount every month while interest is credited quarterly - the standard formula Indian banks use models that exactly, instead of compounding each deposit separately.

Is tax on the interest included?

No. TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on FD/RD interest is not deducted here - the interest shown is the gross amount.

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
