Alongside the Gregorian calendar, the traditional Chinese lunar calendar is present in daily life across much of East and Southeast Asia - for holidays such as Chinese New Year, for the twelve-animal zodiac cycle (sheng xiao), and in many families for birth dates. Each lunar-calendar year is assigned one of twelve animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig), which repeat every twelve years. This tool shows the matching lunar-calendar date and the zodiac animal of that lunar year for a given Gregorian date.
The calculation runs entirely locally in your browser, in pure JavaScript - nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. The lunar calendar has no fixed formula: month lengths and leap months follow the actual moon phase and sun position. The tool therefore uses the astronomical lunar-calendar calculation built into the browser to determine the lunar year; the zodiac animal then follows from a simple twelve-year cycle assignment. If your date falls before that calendar year's Chinese New Year, the tool correctly still shows the previous lunar year's zodiac animal.
An honest note: this tool only shows the conversion from a Gregorian date to the lunar-calendar date and zodiac animal (forward direction); entering a lunar-calendar date directly is not offered here. A very old browser without full calendar support shows an honest dash instead of a wrong result.

Limitations: Shows only the forward direction (Gregorian to lunar calendar/zodiac); entering a lunar-calendar date directly is not offered. Relies on the astronomical calculation built into the browser; a very old browser without full calendar support shows an honest dash instead of a wrong result.
FAQ
Are my inputs uploaded?
No. The calculation runs entirely locally in the browser (pure JavaScript); nothing is sent or stored.
How is the zodiac animal determined?
From the lunar-calendar year of your date, via a simple twelve-year cycle assignment of the twelve animals.
Why does a January date sometimes still show the previous year's zodiac animal?
Because Chinese New Year, depending on the moon phase, falls only in late January or February - before that, the date still belongs to the previous lunar year.
Can I also enter a lunar-calendar date?
Not in this tool - it only shows the conversion starting from a Gregorian date (forward direction).
