CAF (Core Audio Format) is Apple's own container, introduced with Mac OS X Tiger - more flexible than AIFF, because it can hold nearly any codec (PCM, AAC, ALAC and more) as well as very long recordings without the old size limits of older formats. GarageBand, Logic Pro and the iOS Voice Memos app use CAF regularly; outside the Apple ecosystem, hardly any program knows it.

The tool demuxes the CAF container and decodes the contained codec (usually PCM or AAC) natively with ffmpeg, before encoding the result with libmp3lame to MP3. That makes an iPhone voice memo or a GarageBand export playable on any device.

Since CAF can be lossless or lossy depending on the contained codec, the sensible bitrate value depends on the source - a plain voice memo needs less, a music mix more headroom. Everything runs locally in the browser.

    In 3 steps

    1. Drop your CAF file.
    2. Choose bitrate and channels.
    3. Download the MP3 file.

Limitations: MP3 is lossy - for an already-lossless CAF (e.g. with PCM content), the conversion means a real step down in quality. One file per run.

    FAQ

    Is my file uploaded?

No, the conversion runs entirely locally in the browser.

Where do CAF files usually come from?

Usually from the iOS Voice Memos app, GarageBand or Logic Pro exports.

Why does Windows not play CAF files?

CAF is an Apple-proprietary container without broad support outside macOS/iOS.

Do I lose quality in the conversion?

If the CAF file contains PCM or another lossless format, yes - MP3 itself is lossy.
