This tool builds an individual cancellation letter from your input: sender and recipient as address blocks, an optional contract or customer number, the letter date and an optional reason - stating a reason is not necessary for most cancellations and stays deliberately optional. Pick one of the five templates above: gym membership, subscription/streaming, insurance, residential tenancy or employment (only your own cancellation as the employee). You can enter the termination date yourself; leave it blank and the tool automatically suggests one for tenancy and employment based on the statutory default period - the other three templates depend too much on the individual contract, so they show "at the next possible date" instead.

Important: two of the five templates require written form - a handwritten signature in ink on the printed original, which must actually reach the recipient. Cancelling a residential tenancy (Sec. 568 (1) BGB) or an employment contract (Sec. 623 BGB, which explicitly excludes electronic form) by email, scan, photo or fax is NOT valid. For these two templates the tool therefore also produces a detachable notice sheet as the first page of the PDF with the exact instructions. For gym membership, subscription/streaming and insurance, text form is normally enough (Sec. 126b BGB) - an email is usually sufficient, because consumer terms and conditions have not been allowed to require a stricter form since 1 October 2016 (Sec. 309 No. 13 BGB); your actual contract always remains authoritative, especially for older contracts.

Honest and important: this tool is not legal advice. It does not check whether your cancellation is possible, sensible or on time in your specific case - all statements about deadlines and form are non-binding hints without warranty, never a guarantee. It sends nothing automatically: you print, sign (where required) and send your letter yourself. Everything runs entirely locally in the browser (pure JavaScript via pdf-lib, no server, no account) - your addresses and contract data never leave your device.

In 3 steps

  1. Pick a template (gym, subscription/streaming, insurance, tenancy or employment) and enter sender/recipient plus any optional details.
  2. Tap Generate - the PDF is built locally in the browser.
  3. Download the PDF, for written-form templates print and sign it, then send it by mail.

Limitations: This tool is not legal advice: it creates a cancellation template from your input and does not check whether a cancellation is possible, sensible or on time in your specific case. All statements about deadlines are non-binding hints without warranty - for tenancy and employment a suggestion computed from the statutory default period (Sec. 573c and Sec. 622 BGB respectively), for the other three templates "at the next possible date", because the deadline depends on the individual contract. Tenancy (Sec. 568 (1) BGB) and employment (Sec. 623 BGB) require written form: print, sign by hand and deliver the original - email, scan or fax are not sufficient. Employer-side cancellations, termination agreements and an employment-reference generator are not part of this tool.

FAQ

Is my data uploaded?

No. The letter is built entirely locally in the browser (pure JavaScript via pdf-lib, no server); your addresses and contract data never leave your device.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a template - not legal advice. It does not check whether your cancellation is possible, sensible or on time in your specific case.

What is the difference between written form and text form?

Written form (tenancy, employment) requires a handwritten signature on the original, which must reach the recipient - email or fax are not enough. Text form (gym, subscription/streaming, insurance) is satisfied by a readable statement, e.g. an email, with no signature.

Is the suggested cancellation deadline guaranteed?

No. The suggestion for tenancy and employment is based on the statutory default period but does not replace your contract or collective agreement and is not a guarantee. For the other templates the deadline depends on the individual contract - check the terms there.

Do I need to give a reason?

Usually not - an ordinary cancellation typically needs no justification. The field therefore stays optional; you can leave it blank.

Can I use this to cancel on behalf of an employer or landlord?

No. The employment template covers only your own cancellation as the employee; employer-side cancellations (with dismissal protection, social selection) and a landlord-side cancellation are not part of this tool.

What applies when cancelling private health insurance that satisfies the insurance mandate?

If your contract satisfies the health-insurance mandate (Sec. 193 (3) sentence 1 VVG), the cancellation only becomes effective under Sec. 205 (6) VVG once you prove, within two months of declaring the cancellation, that you are continuously insured with a new insurer without a gap. Without this proof, the contract remains in force.

Can cancelling my own employment trigger a benefits waiting period (Sperrzeit)?

Yes, that is possible: if you cancel your own employment contract, Sec. 159 SGB III can trigger a waiting period for unemployment benefit unless you have good cause. Whether that applies in your case is decided by the Federal Employment Agency. Clarify this before you cancel - not afterwards.

Can I sign the tenancy cancellation electronically instead?

Legally that is possible if the document carries a qualified electronic signature (QES, Sec. 126a BGB) and reaches the landlord in that electronic form with a verifiable signature (BGH, 27 Nov 2024 - VIII ZR 159/23). An email with a scanned signature is not enough. In practice, the signed original therefore remains the safe choice. The opposite applies to employment contracts: Sec. 623 BGB excludes electronic form, and a QES does not help there either.

Does the text-form rule also apply to a contract from before October 2016?

Sec. 309 No. 13 BGB in its current version (no stricter form than text form in standard terms) applies under Art. 229 Sec. 37 EGBGB only to contracts concluded after 30 September 2016. For older contracts, a term in the standard conditions can still require written form. Even then, an email or a fax is usually enough to satisfy a merely contractually agreed written-form requirement (Sec. 127 (2) BGB) - the signed letter is always the safe choice.
