Exporting YouTube captions or using an older captioning tool sometimes produces a .sbv file (SubViewer) instead of the now more common SRT file - but many desktop players, editing programs and other video platforms do not recognise SBV at all. This tool converts your .sbv file into an .srt.

SBV writes the start and end time comma-separated on one line with no index; SRT instead requires a sequential number before each subtitle and separates start and end with its own "-->" arrow. The tool reads the SBV lines and numbers the subtitles sequentially from one when writing them back out.

The conversion runs entirely locally in your browser - the file is not uploaded. If the tool finds no valid timing information, you get an honest error message instead of an empty output.

      In 3 steps

      1. Drop the .sbv file.
      2. SRT is produced automatically.
      3. Download the .srt file.

Limitations: SBV never carried positioning or style hints to begin with, so none of that is lost in conversion. Timings and text are preserved, and the subtitles are renumbered sequentially.

      FAQ

      Is my file sent anywhere?

No, the conversion is purely local in the browser.

Does the result work in VLC and similar players?

Yes, SRT is the most common subtitle format and is read by practically every player.

Why does my editing program not recognise a .sbv file?

SBV is a YouTube-specific format - most desktop players and editing programs support SRT or VTT instead.

Does it also work the other way, SRT to SBV?

Yes, there is the sibling tool "Convert SRT to SBV" for that.
